‘Any luck?’ Modren asked, the hope in his voice annoyingly shining a light on Mithrid’s failure.

Nobody spoke. Eyrum shook his head.

‘Doesn’t matter,’ the undermage pressed on. ‘He’s ready.’

‘Fucking finally,’ Mithrid muttered.

Hereni poked Mithrid in the shoulder before rapidly withdrawing her touch. Mithrid felt a shudder in her heart and wondered why she was so nervous.
